CN launches carbon emissions calculator

CN yesterday announced the launch of a self-service sustainability tool — "My Carbon Emissions" — to help customers calculate their greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

Now available on the CN One eBusiness platform, the tool provides customers a detailed report of their estimated emissions based on all loaded shipments moved through CN’s network. The tool also shows customers the emissions they saved by moving goods over rail than road.

"Moving long-haul freight by train instead of truck can reduce GHG emissions by up to 75%," said Doug MacDonald, executive vice president and chief marketing officer, in a press release.

The Class I has set science-based targets to reduce its Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions intensity by 43% and Scope 3 emissions intensity by 40% by 2030 from a 2019 base year. The railroad has committed to a net-zero emissions target year of 2050.
