CN yesterday published its annual plan for how it has prepared for the upcoming 2024-2025 winter season.

The plan includes feedback from customers, railroaders, supply chain partners and stakeholders, said CN President and CEO Tracy Robinson in a press release.

“This collaborative approach allows us to put in place proactive solutions across the network as we make the operational shift for winter operations," she said.

The plan highlights how CN is:

• leveraging technology. CN is deploying its fourth-generation Autonomous Track Inspection Program , which uses radar to assess ballast and subgrade conditions.

• enhancing network reliability. In 2024, CN invested over C$1 million to overhaul 20 of its air cars, replacing air compressors and other major components to ensure reliability. CN’s air cars are deployed during the colder months to reduce the need to shorten trains. Since 2009, the program has invested C$61.1 million.

• preparing response readiness. CN maintains a reserve of locomotives in critical corridors to limit delays caused by weather. It also deploys backup power generators across the network, allowing operations to continue during power failures.

• adding people: Between April 2023 and May 2024, the number of available CN operating employees grew by 9%.
