CN nets EJ&E mitigation pact with another Illinois town

Yesterday, CN announced it reached a voluntary mitigation agreement with Sauk Village, Ill., that addresses environmental and safety concerns surrounding the Class I’s acquisition of the Elgin, Joliet and Eastern Railway Co. (EJ&E). CN now has hammered out similar pacts with 24 of the 33 communities situated on the EJ&E’s lines in Illinois and Indiana.
The Sauk Village pact calls for CN to fund various measures in the municipality, including a new quiet zone, noise mitigation work, and emergency response training and communication.
“We believe these voluntary agreements will establish the grounds for positive, constructive relationships between the railroad and communities in the years ahead,” said Jim Vena, CN’s senior vice president-Southern Region, in a prepared statement.
CN also is working closely with communities along the EJ&E that do not have agreements with the Class I to ensure safety and environmental conditions stipulated by the Surface Transportation Board are met. CN still expects to complete the EJ&E integration within three years.
