CN releases latest winter action plan

CN yesterday announced it published its 2023-2024 Winter Plan, which outlines the actions the Class I expects to take to meet customer demand in the upcoming winter months.

The railroad aims to overcome winter challenges by:

• enhancing the scheduled operating plan that was launched last year to foster incremental improvements. The plan delivered the best rail-car velocity since 2016, and prompted strong and consistent traffic movements;

• using 57 additional high-horsepower locomotives acquired in October 2022, modernizing 60 DC-traction locomotives and continuing a locomotive reliability initiative to support a more reliable and more fuel- and carbon-efficient motive-power fleet;

• employing an additional 800 new high-capacity box cars and 500 high-efficiency hopper cars acquired this year, as well as adding 750 new hoppers in 2024; and

• keeping staff resourcing in line with anticipated customer demand.

“Winter conditions bring unique challenges to every part of the supply chain, from production to market. [Our] Winter Plan seeks to anticipate those challenges, mitigate their impact and facilitate quick recovery,” said CN President and CEO Tracy Robinson in a press release. “But the resiliency and reliability of Canada’s end-to-end supply chain require us all to work together — coordinating our planning and aligning our execution.”
