In summer, CN plans to begin building the Calgary Logistics Park, a 680-acre industrial/logistics park to be located in Conrich, Alberta, northeast of Calgary. The more than $200 million project is targeted for completion by 2012’s end.

The park will feature a state-of-the-art intermodal terminal; more than 2 million square feet of warehousing capacity, including a multi-commodity rail-to-truck transload and warehouse facility; and dimensional shipment and heavy container handling capacity. CN also plans to add an automotive compound for regional vehicle distribution by 2013, and a liquid and dry-bulk transload and distribution facility at a later date. The park will be operational in early 2013, according to CN.

The park “will provide seamless transportation solutions to rail customers moving products and commodities into and out of Calgary, one of the fastest growing cities in North America and a key logistics hub for consumer and industrial goods markets in southern Alberta,” said CN President and Chief Executive Officer Claude Mongeau in a prepared statement.

The logistics park is part of the Class I’s plan to build similar multi-modal facilities at key distribution nodes to handle various goods and commodities, he said.

“Our goal is to reduce logistics costs for our customers through highly efficient materials handling, transportation and distribution processes,” said Mongeau.
