Dow Jones recognizes CN's sustainability efforts
CN's sustainability practices helped the railroad earn recognition as the leader in the "Transportation and Transportation Infrastructure Industry" sector of the Dow Jones Sustainability World Index (DJSI), the Class I announced yesterday.
CN is listed on the DJSI World Index for the second-straight year and the DJSI North American Index for the fifth-consecutive year. Launched in 1999, the indices are the first to track the financial performance of leading, sustainability-driven companies globally, CN officials said in a press release.
The DJSI follows a best-in-class approach, surveying sustainability leaders from each industry on a global and regional level, they said. The DJSI annual review is based on an analysis of economic, environmental and social performance, and an assessment of various issues, such as corporate governance, risk management, branding, climate change mitigation, supply chain standards and labor practices.
CN leads the North American rail industry in fuel efficiency, overall consuming about 15 percent less fuel per gross-ton-mile than the industry average, CN officials said.
"We are making continuing gains in our sustainability agenda, and we are pleased that the DJSI has recognized CN as a leader in the area again this year," said President and Chief Executive Officer Claude Mongeau. "CN has made environmental sustainability a strategic priority for the company, with a focus on emissions and energy efficiency, waste management and environmental stewardship."
