CAW members ratify four-year CP contract

Yesterday, the Canadian Auto Workers (CAW) announced that a vast majority of its members at Canadian Pacific ratified a tentative contract that was reached on Feb. 5.

Covering 2,100 mechanical services workers, the four-year agreement includes wage increases, better benefits, retirement incentives, and “language improvements” for work rules and skilled trades, according to the union. The contract expires on Dec. 31, 2014.

The CAW faced the pending closure of CP’s Ogden shop in Calgary, Alberta. To lessen the closure’s impact on members who worked at the shop, the union negotiated retirement incentives, severance programs and work opportunities at an Alyth facility in Calgary, CAW officials said in a prepared statement

"It was a difficult set of negotiations, particularly given the demographics and varying needs of the membership  — ranging from new hires to those heading into retirement," said CAW Local 101 President Tom Murphy.
