Canadian Pacific yesterday unveiled a new logo to commemorate its role in Canada's history as the nation marks its 150th anniversary this year.

The logo combines images that reflect the past and future, CP officials said in a press release.

It features a gold heritage shield containing the images of a beaver and maple leaf — both national symbols for Canada — along with the modern red "CP" abbreviation that the railroad has used as its logo since 2012.

"2017 is an exciting year for Canada and for CP as we re-connect with our past and continue to build for the future," said CP President and Chief Executive Officer Keith Creel. "I join our employees across the network in enthusiastically welcoming back the beaver, a symbol our company first adopted in 1886 as the first transcontinental trains began service to the west from Montreal and Toronto."

CP will announce through social media updates how it will celebrate its role in Canada's history, company officials said.

A history of CP's logo can be read here.
