Canadian Wheat Board to build CP-served grain elevator in Saskatchewan

The Canadian Wheat Board (CWB) late last week announced plans to develop a third high-throughput grain facility in Canada. The board in fall expects to begin constructing a Canadian Pacific-served grain elevator near Pasqua, Saskatchewan.

Scheduled to open in January 2016, the elevator will feature a 134-car loop track and cleaning facilities. The facility will be built adjacent to a CP line.

Pasqua is centrally located, "right in the middle of a high-production area and with the ability to ship grain both East and West, as well as to the South," said CWB President and Chief Executive Officer Ian White in a press release.

The board also is building grain elevators in Colonsay, Saskatchewan, and Bloom, Manitoba.

In addition, the CWB has completed its acquisition of Great Sandhills Terminal Ltd. The deal — first announced in June — includes a high-throughput grain-handling facility near Leader, Saskatchewan, and a majority stake in Great Sandhills Railway, which operates 122 miles of track between Swift Current and Burstall, Saskatchewan.

"CWB continues to build a strong network throughout the grain marketing supply chain through the purchase and construction of assets in the country and at port," said White.
