The Teamsters Canada Rail Conference (TCRC) has served a notice of dispute to Canadian Minister of Labor Seamus O'Regan under Canada's labor code regarding the union's differences with Canadian Pacific.
The main issues at hand include wages, benefits and pensions, according to a TCRC press release.
The TCRC expects to conduct a strike vote among its more than 3,000 locomotive engineers, conductors, train and yard workers. The strike vote results will be tabulated in late February, union officials said.
The labor minister has appointed a conciliator/mediator to support the process. Representatives from the TCRC and CP are meeting with the conciliator.
A legal work stoppage can't occur until 21 days after the conciliation process is completed, union officials said.
CP has negotiated "in good faith" with the union since September 2021, and those negotiations are continuing, a spokesperson said in an emailed statement.
"CP has an excellent track record of successful collective bargaining with our unions, and is seeking a new agreement with TCRC to create labor stability that is essential for Canada’s economic recovery from the pandemic and supply chain challenges," the CP spokesperson said.
