Canadian Pacific Kansas City on Jan. 15 submitted its response to the Mexican government's intention of expanding passenger-rail service across Mexico.

The Class I's response was submitted following Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador’s decree made late last year that included a call for freight railroads to allow their tracks to be used by passenger trains.

CPKC's response is one of five that the government received from rail operators by a Jan. 15 deadline. Although the government did not identify the five, CPKC acknowledged in an email that it is one of the respondents.

"CPKC representatives will meet with Mexican federal officials to discuss our submission, next steps and the critical importance of maintaining and not reducing freight capacity on the CPKC de Mexico network, today and in the future to address increasing demand from nearshoring," the company said in its emailed statement.

The Mexican government has identified seven priority routes for potential passenger-rail development. According to a government press release, they are:
• Mexico-Veracruz regional train;
• AIFA-Pachuca-Tula Interurban Train;
• Train Buenavista-Tula-Querétaro-León-Aguascalientes;
• Train Manzanillo-Colima-Guadalajara-Irapuato;
• Mexico-San Luis Potosí-Monterrey-Nuevo Laredo;
• México-Querétaro-Guadalajara-Tepic-Mazatlán-Nogales; and
• Aguascalientes-Chihuahua-Ciudad Juárez.
