Canadian Pacific Kansas City and Teck Resources Ltd. have reached a long-term agreement for the transportation of steelmaking coal from Teck's four operations in southeastern British Columbia, the companies announced today.

The agreement builds on existing services in place and runs through 2026, CPKC and Teck officials said in a press release.

As part of a shared commitment to environmental sustainability, the companies also said a pilot program, starting in early 2024, will use CPKC's hydrogen locomotives to haul Teck steelmaking coal. The companies also will invest in infrastructure and technology to increase the resiliency of Canada’s supply chain, they said.

"This collaboration with CPKC to pioneer hydrogen locomotive technology supports our climate action strategy and our objective of achieving net zero by 2050," said Teck CEO Jonathan Price.

For CPKC, the agreement helps the Class I take "the next step in the development of our innovative hydrogen locomotive program," said CPKC President and CEO Keith Creel.
