On March 16, Canadian Pacific Kansas City leaders joined representatives from the Kansas City Current women's soccer team and local dignitaries in Kansas City, Missouri, to mark the opening of CPKC Stadium.
It's the first stadium built specifically for a women's professional sports team. In October 2023, CPKC announced an agreement with the KC Current for naming rights to the stadium. Located near downtown on a seven-acre site, the stadium has a maximum seating capacity of 11,500.
"CPKC has been a long-time champion of women’s professional sports and investing in our communities. Today, we proudly build on that legacy with this barrier-breaking stadium opening," said CPKC President and CEO Keith Creel in a press release.
Prior to stadium opening to the public for the KC Current's first regular season home game, CPKC presented the team with a new specially designed mini-train modeled after the railroad's popular "Little General" mini-train. The mini-trains visit communities across the Class I's network to help raise awareness of rail safety.
In addition to the stadium bearing the railroad's name, an outdoor space at the entrance — a family-friendly area where fans and spectators can gather before events and shop at the team store — is called CPKC Plaza.
With every goal scored by the KC Current this season, both at home and away, CPKC will make a donation to the Adelaide C. Ward Women's Heart Health Center at the University of Kansas Health System.
