Canadian Transport Minister Omar Alghabra yesterday announced CA$31 million in additional funding toward a CA$179 million grade separation and street-widening project in Edmonton, Alberta.
The project will create an overpass over the existing Canadian Pacific Kansas City crossing north of the Sherwood Park Freeway, as well as create two new traffic lanes on 50th Street, according to a Transport Canada (TC) press release.
The funding will come from the National Trade Corridors Fund. The contribution is in addition to the more than CA$39 million announced in 2018 for the same project.
The project is designed to improve the safety of the rail crossing, reduce congestion and travel times in the city and make the flow of goods through a "key trade corridor" more efficient, TC officials said.
This year, main construction focus will be on building the northbound overpass and working on stormwater drainage. Once this is complete, construction will shift to the southbound overpass. Project construction, which began in spring 2022, involves completing underground and overhead utility and drainage work and is expected to be completed by fall 2027.
