Yesterday, Norfolk Southern Corp. announced 49 winners of its Thoroughbred Chemical Safety Awards for 2010.

For the past 15 years, NS has presented the award, which recognizes a company or facility that ships more than 1,000 carloads of regulated hazardous materials — such as chemicals, petroleum products, biofuels and sulfur — on the railroad without an incident in a given year. The current winners include 42 corporations and seven plants.

“Altogether, these customers safely shipped more than 145,900 carloads of chemical products and goods that are essential to the U.S. economy and consumers, but potentially dangerous if mishandled during shipment,” said NS officials in a prepared statement.

The Class I also announced plans to increase its support of relief efforts in states hit hard by recent severe storms. In addition to supporting efforts in Alabama, Mississippi, and Tennessee, NS will contribute to relief efforts in Virginia.

“The damaging storms did not spare our headquarters state, and we want our employees, neighbors and business partners to know that we stand with them in recovery and rebuilding," said NS Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer Wick Moorman.
