BNSF Railway Co. senior executives expect to reopen a key flooded-out subdivision a tad earlier than expected. The Class I now anticipates reopening the St. Joseph Subdivision on Sept. 3, five days earlier than previously projected, wrote Executive Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer John Lanigan in a letter to customers dated Aug. 26.

“Opening this important corridor along the Missouri River will allow us to start returning rerouted traffic to normal routing,” he wrote. “Portions of the nearby Napier and Omaha subdivisions will remain out of service due to persistent high water levels. We anticipate reopening those subdivisions in late September or early October, pending receding flood waters.”

BNSF employees and contractors continue to work 24/7 to restore and repair a bridge in the St. Joseph Subdivision, which encompasses portions of Missouri and Nebraska. Four of five bridges already have been repaired, the letter states.

“As we complete the fifth bridge, we are preparing to implement our action plans to improve your service as quickly as possible,” wrote Lanigan. “This will complement efforts already under way to improve velocity and service throughout our network.”

Service will improve in areas that absorbed the rerouted traffic, such as Colorado and Illinois, he added.
