(Re)opening soon: BNSF's last flood-impacted subdivision

By mid-October, BNSF Railway Co. expects to reopen the Napier Subdivision between Napier, Mo., and Pacific Junction, Iowa — the last subdivision to remain out of service because of heavy spring and summer floods. The Class I continues to reroute some trains around the affected area, but about 90 percent of all traffic that moves through the subdivision is operating on normal routes, said Executive Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer John Lanigan in a customer letter dated Oct. 7.

BNSF recently reopened the Omaha Subdivision between Omaha and Bellevue, Neb. Since the railroad reopened that route and the St. Joseph Subdivision between Lincoln, Neb., and Kansas City, Mo., during the past month, network velocity has improved by about 8 percent because of restoration efforts and a focus on service improvements, wrote Lanigan.

“We will continue to focus on … service as we enter the traditional fall peak shipping season,” he wrote. “Last week, we moved over 200,000 carloads for the first time in three years. We hope it is a positive sign for the economy.”

Meanwhile, Union Pacific Railroad has nearly fully recovered from infrastructure damage and traffic detours caused by massive Missouri River floods.
