U.S. Development Group L.L.C. (USD) recently announced the completion of an expansion at the St. James Rail Terminal in St. James, La., which handles and distributes crude oil and condensate in the Gulf Coast region.

The project doubled the Union Pacific Railroad-served terminal’s daily capacity to 130,000 barrels or two unit trains. The work included the construction of seven miles of track and an automated high-speed rail-car offloading rack at the terminal, which launched operations in summer 2010. USD has begun building on additional rail track that’s slated for completion in June.

The expansion will provide refiner/blender customers greater access to a steady supply of high-quality crude oil, and enable USD to offer the capacity for higher rail volumes of oil and condensate from the Bakken, Eagle Ford and Niobrara shales, as well as other major oil production areas, USD officials said in a prepared statement.

“Shipping crude oil by rail is a safe and reliable transportation option that provides flexibility in delivering crude oil to markets,” said Diane Duren, UP’s vice president and general manager-chemicals. “Union Pacific’s extensive network and logistics expertise, combined with USD’s state-of-the-art crude oil unit train terminal, form a comprehensive logistics solution for crude oil producers and marketers looking to transport their barrels to the Gulf Coast.”
