Kansas City Southern slates train speed boost in Mississippi, names haz-mat safety award winners

On June 8, Kansas City Southern Railway Co. (KCSR) plans to increase train speed on some segments of its Gulfport-to-Hattiesburg, Miss., line from 10 mph to 25 mph. A 10-mph speed limit will be maintained through downtown Wiggins and speed limits south of Interstate 10 won’t increase.

Train speed will increase over the segments because of a major track rehabilitation effort, which will enhance economic development opportunities at the Port of Gulfport, KCSR officials said in a prepared statement.

Meanwhile, KCSR parent Kansas City Southern announced that 15 customers will receive a Hazmat Shippers Safety Appreciation Award for originating more than 500 bulk haz-mat shipments on KCS last year without a non-accidental release.

As part of its commitment to the Responsible Care® program, KCS established the award to promote haz-mat customers’ excellence in safety, environmental protection and regulatory compliance, and efforts to properly secure haz-mat containers for rail transportation.
