A $97.5 million intermodal facility in McCalla, Ala., will be “ideally located to serve the Southeast” and will be a “critical component” of Norfolk Southern Railway’s Crescent Corridor projects, NS Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer Wick Moorman said yesterday during the facility’s groundbreaking ceremony, according to a press release.

Located on a 316-acre site near Birmingham, the facility will be part of the NS Crescent Corridor initiative to “establish efficient, high-capacity intermodal freight rail route between the Gulf Coast and Northeast,” NS officials said.

Moorman attended the groundbreaking ceremony with Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley and other officials.

“This new terminal will enable goods to move more quickly around the country,” Bentley said.

During the next 10 years, the facility is expected to create 8,600 jobs and expand its capacity to handle 165,000 containers and trailers per year.

Other new independent intermodal facilities in the works as part of the $2.5 billion Crescent Corridor program include sites in Charlotte, N.C.; Greencastle, Pa.; and Memphis, Tenn. An intermodal terminal in Harrisburg, Pa., is slated for expansion, NS officials said.
