American Carbon Registry provides 'excellence' award to NS

advertisement
Norfolk Southern Corp. has received the American Carbon Registry’s (ACR) Corporate Excellence award for outstanding performance in measuring and reducing its carbon emissions.
The Class I has committed to reducing CO2 emissions 10 percent below 2009 levels by 2014. In the first year, NS reached nearly 40 percent of the five-year goal, according to ACR.
The emission reductions were achieved through locomotive fuel efficiency, increased energy efficiency at buildings and railroad facilities, and operating efficiencies that enabled the railroad to move higher freight volumes.
In addition, NS in 2011 launched Trees and Trains, a $5.6 million partnership with ACR member GreenTrees to plant 6 million hardwood and cottonwood trees throughout 10,000 acres of the Mississippi Alluvial Valley.
A nonprofit enterprise of Winrock International, ACR is a carbon offset program founded in 1996.
