BNSF: Customers cut carbon dioxide emissions by using rail instead of trucks

Last year, BNSF Railway Co.’s customers cut their carbon dioxide emissions more than 30 million metric tons by using rail instead of trucks, BNSF officials said in a prepared statement. The reduction is equivalent to cutting annual fuel consumption and resulting greenhouse-gas emissions from more than 6 million passenger vehicles, the Class I estimates.

For the fourth straight year, BNSF provided its intermodal, automotive, industrial products and agricultural products customers with customized letters that analyzed their total rail carbon footprint and savings compared to truck movements. Calculations, which are based on commodity type and weight, and rail distance traveled, take into account the different fuel efficiencies of trailer, container or carload shipments.

“We believe our chief contribution to sustainability is the major fuel efficiency and emissions reductions our customers achieve shipping with BNSF instead of solely over the road,” said John Lanigan, BNSF’s executive vice president and chief marketing officer.
