BNSF Railway Co. recently received the Rail Origin of the Year Performance Excellence Award at the American Honda Automotive Logistics Conference in Torrance, Calif. The award recognizes BNSF’s point-of-origin performance at the Port of Portland, Ore.

The award is based on such criteria as the percentage of loaded rail cars without damage, cars ordered versus those supplied and quarterly audits on properly followed standard operating procedures, according to American Honda.

“Throughout the year, BNSF has met and exceeded our goals for rail origin criteria at Portland, which has aided in the movement of Honda and Acura products,” said Dennis Manns, American Honda’s assistant vice president of logistics, in a prepared statement.

Meanwhile, Union Pacific Railroad is upgrading about 70 miles of track in Colorado on a line stretching from the Moffat Tunnel's east portal to near Kremmling. To be completed by year’s end, the more than $10 million project calls for removing and installing more than 55,600 ties, renewing surfaces at 51 grade crossings, spreading about 33,600 tons of ballast and replacing more than two miles of rail in various curves.
