The Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) recently commended CN for its approach to disclosing climate change information. For the third consecutive year, the Class I is featured in CDP's "Carbon Disclosure Leadership Index,” which highlights Canada 200 Index companies that displayed the “most professional approach” to corporate governance regarding climate change information disclosure practices, CN officials said in a prepared statement.
The CDP scores companies according to their climate change disclosure policies, including those focused on greenhouse-gas emissions, emissions reduction targets, and risks and opportunities associated with climate change. A high index score indicates good internal data management and an understanding of climate change-related issues affecting the company, CN officials said.
The index, which is compiled by Accenture on behalf of CDP, serves as an evaluation tool for institutional investors and other stakeholders. In 2011, the index includes the leading 10 percent of companies from the Canada 200 Index.
“Environmental sustainability is a strategic priority for CN, which is focused on lowering emissions, increasing energy efficiency, reducing waste and encouraging environmental stewardship among our employees,” said CN President and Chief Executive Officer Claude Mongeau. “CN leads the North American rail industry in fuel efficiency, consuming [about] 10 percent less fuel per gross-ton-mile than the rail industry average.”
