CSX Corp. and CN have been named to the Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI) for North America, and CN also has been listed on the World Index.

For CSX, this was the fifth consecutive year of being named to the North American index; for CN, it was the seventh consecutive year on the North American index and fourth consecutive year on the DJSI World Index, the Class Is said in separate press releases.

The sustainability indices are prepared under a partnership between S&P Down Jones Indices and RobecoSAM, the investment specialist focused on sustainability investing.

"We view sustainability as a winning strategy for both our business and the communities in which our employees, customers and neighbors live and work," said Michael Ward, CSX chairman and chief executive officer. "Through our commitment to sustainability, we minimize our impact on the environment, lower operating costs, and offer our customers an attractive transportation solution to reduce their carbon footprint."

CSX is the only U.S. railroad recognized by the North American index, and is one of four transportation companies on this year’s list, company officials said. The Class I scored strong performances across the assessed criteria, specifically in its environmental policy and management system, fuel efficiency, climate strategy, corporate governance, and stakeholder engagement.

CSX set a record in fuel efficiency in 2014, and has reduced greenhouse gas emissions intensity by 4.5 percent since 2011, according to the company.

Meanwhile, CN's sustainability agenda "integrates our activities and shapes our thinking in a way that allows us to go further," said CN Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Jim Vena.

"CN leads the North American rail industry in fuel efficiency, consuming 15 percent less fuel per gross-ton-mile overall than our peers," Vena said. "This important recognition highlights our ongoing commitment to operating a safe and environmentally responsible railroad."

The Montreal-based Class I's sustainability efforts also includes a commitment to its "EcoConnexions – From the Ground Up" program, which since 2012 has sponsored tree-planting projects in 85 communities, according to the company.
