On Monday, CSX Transportation awarded $5,000 to two people for proposing ways to protect the environment as part of the Class I’s  “Tomorrow Moves” contest on the Facebook social media site.

CSXT, which launched the Facebook contest earlier this spring to demonstrate its commitment to “green” technology and environmental leadership, asked people to explain in 200 words their ideas for protecting the environment.

CSXT solicited its Facebook “friends” to vote for their favorite idea. The top 10 vote-getters’ proposals were sent to a panel of five judges who chose the two winners: Troy Curtis and Ricardo Peterson.

Peterson’s idea called for installing a household water conservation apparatus that would reuse bath, shower and sink water for other purposes, such as gardening. Curtis proposed redesigning surplus shipping containers into modular homes and businesses using green technology.

More than 350 ideas were submitted and more than 3,700 votes were cast in the contest, according to CSXT. Progressive Railroading Assistant Editor Julie Sneider served on the judges’ panel.
