Defense department honors CSX with 'employer support' award

CSX Corp. is among 15 recipients of the 2011 Secretary of Defense Employer Support Freedom Award, which is bestowed by the U.S. Department of Defense’s Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR). Established in 1996, the award recognizes employers that provide “exceptional support” for workers who serve in the U.S. National Guard and Army Reserve.

CSX is the only company to win the award twice; the railroad first received it in 1998. In addition to providing programs that support active guard and reserve members, the Class I “has made a strong commitment” to employing and supporting veterans, CSX officials said in a prepared statement. Nearly one in five CSX employees has military experience, and many continue to serve the guard and reserves. In addition, CSX supports the Wounded Warrior Project, which provides programs and services for injured service members to aid their transition to civilian lives.

Other companies that “stood out from a field of 4,049 nominations” include the 3M Co., Ford Motor Co., Hanson Professional Services Inc. and Wells Fargo & Co., according to the ESGR.

A selection board comprising senior defense department officials, business leaders and prior award winners selected the 15 recipients. The 2011 honorees will be recognized in Washington, D.C., at the 16th annual Secretary of Defense Employer Support Freedom Award ceremony on Sept. 22. Since 1996, only 145 employers have been presented the award, according to the ESGR.
