Union Pacific Railroad and Ferromex (FXE) announced Oct. 12 that issuance of future permits for some grain shuttles will be suspended due to a derailment that occurred south of Eagle Pass, Texas.

Given the high volume of ag unit train volume in the pipeline and additional volume forecasted over the next week, UP and FXE suspended issuance of future permits for active FXE embargos, according to a UP customer announcement posted on UP's website.

The suspension will remain in effect until the current train lineup is cleared and trains are able to launch upon release, the railroads said. The announcement did not provide details of the derailment.

Ag unit trains now at loading facilities, or with a next trip forecast for Eagle Pass or El Paso destinations, may use the permitting process for a trip to Mexico. Empty trains returning for loading planning the next trip for Eagle Pass or El Paso destinations, without a trip in the current forecast, will be required to find an alternative destination, according to the statement.

"Union Pacific’s network is healthy and positioned well to handle harvest volumes," UP officials said.
