KCS seeks to solidify short-line partnerships

Earlier this month, three Kansas City Southern executives attended the American Short Line and Regional Railroad Association’s annual meeting in San Antonio to network with small railroad officials and participate in various educational sessions.
“Our participation in this conference is part of a larger initiative to align KCS with our short-line partners and extend our market reach,” said Assistant Vice President of Sales and Marketing Darin Selby in an item posted on the “KCS News” web page. “We’re also developing short-line partner profiles, which will soon be available on our website … to educate both our sales team and customers about the capabilities of our short-line partners.”
In addition, KCS announced it will host its annual short line conference in Kansas City, Mo., Sept. 27-28. For the first time, this conference will be combined with the Class I’s annual transload conference.
“There are a lot of synergies between these two segments of our business. Sometimes, it’s more efficient or cost-effective to set up a transload on one of our connecting short lines, especially when multiple switches are needed,” said Selby. “This conference will put both our short line and transload partners in one place to learn about the KCS operation, network and develop ideas for new business.”
