STB: Class I employment drops in all categories in January

Class Is employed 156,602 employees in the United States as of mid-January, down 8.67 percent year-over-year and 2.61 percent compared with mid-December, according to the Surface Transportation Board.

All reported employment categories reflected workforce decreases in mid-January compared with mid-December: executives, officials and staff assistants, down 0.34 percent; professional and administrative, down 0.87 percent; maintenance of way and structures, down 0.22 percent; maintenance of equipment and stores, down 1.49 percent; transportation (other than train and engine), down 2.13 percent; and transportation (train and engine), down 5.25 percent.

Year over year, all reported categories reflected decreases, as well: executives, officials and staff assistants, down 3.76 percent; professional and administrative, down 1.68 percent; maintenance of way and structures, down 2.61 percent; maintenance of equipment and stores, down 3.29 percent; transportation (other than T&E), down 3.25 percent; and transportation (T&E), down 16.58 percent.
