Union Pacific Railroad plans to spend $10.9 million to upgrade a 95-mile line between Athol and Eastport, Idaho. To be completed in June, the work includes replacing more than 79,000 ties, installing more than 28,000 tons of ballast and renewing surfaces at 83 grade crossings. UP also plans to spend $4 million to bolster a 27-mile line between Grand Junction and Cameo, Colo. To be completed by mid-May, the project calls for replacing 25,200 ties, spreading 13,300 tons of ballast and renewing surfaces at 42 crossings.
Both maintenance-of way projects are part of UP’s $3.6 billion capital spending budget for 2012. Pat Quinn and the Illinois General Assembly have proclaimed that July 1 will be Union Pacific Railroad Day in Illinois to honor the Class I’s 150th anniversary. President Abraham Lincoln signed the Pacific Railway Act on July 1, 1862, which established the original UP. "It is an honor to be recognized by the state of Illinois as we commemorate our railroad's sesquicentennial celebration and growing up together," said Bob Turner, UP’s senior vice president of corporate relations, in a prepared statement.
