Volkswagen Group of America Inc. recently announced plans to build a $40 million warehouse in Roane County, Tenn., to distribute domestic auto parts for Passats built at the company’s $1 billion Chattanooga, Tenn., plant that opened last year. The 400,000-square-foot warehouse is expected to open by spring 2013.
The facility first will serve as a redistribution center to support dealers in the United States, Canada and Mexico, and later will be expanded to include a parts distribution center.
“This new facility is exemplary of the commitment that Volkswagen Group of America has to meeting the needs of our dealers and our growing customer base," said Rawdon Glover, the group’s executive vice president of aftersales, in a prepared statement.
Volkswagen’s Chattanooga plant is served by CSX Transportation (for moves along the East Coast) and by Norfolk Southern Railway (for deliveries in other territories). Trains transport Passats to 16 U.S., three Canadian and one Mexican destination.
