Sandersville Railroad adds road builder to future rail spur users

The Sandersville Railroad Co. this week announced that Pittman Construction will use the railroad's planned rail spur in Hancock County, Georgia.

Pittman will use the spur to transport liquid asphalt, a nonhazardous, low-temperature, highly viscous to semisolid ingredient in asphalt used to pave highways, Sandersville Railroad officials said in a press release. Liquid asphalt is currently being delivered to the Pittman facility via truck.

The 4.5-mile-long spur will connect the CSX line that runs along Georgia Highway 16 in Hancock County to the Heidelberg Materials aggregate quarry in Sparta. Pittman is located adjacent to the Heidelberg facility at the end of the spur.

The spur is projected to generate more than $1.5 million in annual economic benefit to the Hancock County community, reducing truck traffic on the county's roads and creating jobs for the county, the release stated.

The Hanson Spur will be Sandersville Railroad's first expansion in Hancock County. Railroad officials anticipate the spur will be fully operational in 2024.
