CSXT, STB address environmental issues

The freight-rail industry continues to seek ways to promote its environmental benefits vs. other transportation modes. For CSX Transportation, the search has resulted in an online “Carbon Calculator.”

Last month, CSXT launched the tool on its Web site (www.csx.com) to enable shippers to calculate carbon dioxide (CO2) emission savings by using rail.

Shippers can enter their cargo’s weight and miles to be shipped to obtain an estimated CO2 savings and comparative data from other modes.

Meanwhile, the Surface Transportation Board (STB) soon will begin studying the environmental impacts of the Alaska Railroad Corp.’s proposed new line between Wasilla and Port MacKenzie.
The railroad plans to build a 30- to 45-mile line — depending on the appropriate route — to establish a rail link between the port and interior Alaska. Currently, trucks are the only surface transportation mode serving the port.

The STB is accepting public comments on its notice to prepare an environmental impact statement, as well as the Section of Environmental Analysis’ initial scoping documents, until March 21.
