Yesterday, U.S. Rep. Joe Donnelly (D-Ind.) attended a groundbreaking ceremony for an intermodal port at INland Logistics Port-Kingsbury industrial park in Kingsburg, Ind.
The initial phase of construction calls for connecting the park to an existing CSX Transportation line. Overall, the park plans to develop 800 acres, and make sites truck and rail accessible. Located about 45 miles southeast of Chicago, the park also is served by the Chicago Southshore & South Bend Railroad.
"The improvements in rail access will give our area businesses easier access to more markets — providing them with opportunities to grow their businesses," said Donnelly in a prepared statement.
After the entire project is completed, a direct rail route will be established between the park and Port Manatee in Tampa Bay, Fla. CSXT will provide express train service to transport Midwest grown and processed foods to Tampa, where some products will be exported from the port to Central and South America.
INland Logistics Port-Kingsbury also plans to establish dedicated unit train service to the Port of New York and New Jersey.
Meanwhile, U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio) announced the village of Greenfield will receive a $2.3 million Economic Development Administration (EDA) grant to help fund upgrades to a rail line between Greenfield and Midland, Ohio. The 29-mile line is operated by the Indiana and Ohio Railway.
The work calls for replacing ties and ballasts, upgrading grade crossings and improving bridges.
"This project will save more than 800 manufacturing jobs and provide an ideal site for future economic investment," said Brown in a prepared statement. "This EDA funding for the upgrade and repair of this railroad is vital for our transportation infrastructure."
