CSX wins economic development award in Pennsylvania

The Pennsylvania Economic Development Association (PEDA) recently awarded CSX Corp. the 2013 Economic Development Partner of the Year Award, which recognizes an organization's innovations and achievements that result in economic development partnerships and opportunities for the state.

The association honored CSX for its $58 million plan to build a new intermodal facility at the former Pittsburgh & Lake Erie Railroad yard, which is a brownfield site. The facility is part of CSX's objective to create the National Gateway, an environmentally friendly rail corridor connecting the Mid-Atlantic and Midwest regions, according to PEDA.

The intermodal terminal represents a major breakthrough for the 10-county Pittsburgh region, generating an anticipated 500-plus jobs and producing a critical element of infrastructure conducive to more innovative and efficient means of rail access and transit methods, PEDA officials said in a blog.

In concert with such regional partners as the Allegheny Conference on Community Development, Allegheny County Economic Development, McKees Rocks Community Development Corporation, Stowe Township Commission and Trinity Commercial Developments, CSX is helping revitalize economic development in the McKees Rocks and Stowe Township areas, they said.

"Through CSX’s efforts, the region’s transportation assets are strengthened and local communities are strategically poised for growth – both of which are solid reasons for investment in southwestern Pennsylvania," PEDA officials said.
