CSX yesterday announced a donation of $5 million to the Baltimore and Ohio (B&O) Railroad Museum's $30 million capital campaign in anticipation of the B&O Railroad’s bicentennial anniversary in 2027.

The donation will be used to build the CSX Bicentennial Garden, an amphitheater and multi-use space that can host local organizations and community gatherings, CSX officials said in a press release.

CSX President and CEO Joe Hinrichs made the announcement with Maryland Gov. Wes Moore at the museum.

"As the successor to the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, CSX has been an integral part of the Maryland economy for generations. We are thrilled to be able to deliver this substantial contribution and serve as a catalyst of growth for this iconic institution and the Baltimore community," Hinrichs said.

The museum’s campus transformation will help connect institutions with their neighboring communities, expand workforce training opportunities on campus and create publicly accessible open space, Moore said. The project also calls for remodeling the South Car Works building — the nation’s oldest operating railroad repair facility — as the museum’s new entryway, the governor said.

CSX’s donation marks a milestone in the museum’s campaign to transform its campus in preparation for the 200th anniversary of American railroading in 2027, said Kris Hoellen, the museum’s executive director.

American railroading got its start in Baltimore, CSX and museum officials said. The B&O Railroad was the nation’s first common carrier railroad.
