CSX yesterday announced it earned a spot on USA Today's 2023 America's Climate Leaders list.
The list ranks U.S. companies that achieved the greatest reduction in emissions intensity between 2019 and 2021. CSX registered an emissions intensity reduction rate of 15.6% through 2021 against a 2014 base year, CSX officials said in a press release.
CSX's greenhouse gas emissions reduction goal is one of the most aggressive in the transportation industry, targeting a 37.3% reduction by 2030 from the 2014 base year, they added.
"We're committed to continuing to reduce our carbon intensity through sustainable operations and technological innovation," said CSX President and CEO Joe Hinrichs.
USA Today partnered with global marketing and consumer data firm Statista to form the list. Statista considered companies' effectiveness in reducing their core emissions intensity, defined as Scope 1 and Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions in relation to revenue. About 2,000 companies were evaluated.
