CSX Corp. recently landed at No. 215 on Newsweek magazine’s 2010 “green rankings” of the 500 largest U.S. companies. For the second year in a row, CSX ranked highest among all Class Is, according to the railroad. In addition, CSX ranked 10th among all transport and aerospace companies.

Three leading environmental organizations quantified CSX’s environmental footprints and policies; the rankings also are partially based on a poll of chief executive officers, environmental officers and other green experts.

CSX has a longstanding commitment to air quality and clean operations, Class I officials said in a prepared statement. The railroad was the first transportation company to voluntarily set a goal to reduce its greenhouse-gas emissions, they said.

CSX also has committed to reduce its carbon dioxide intensity 8 percent by 2011 in part by using more fuel-efficient and environmentally friendly GenSet locomotives in yards, and upgrading locomotives with technology designed to reduce fuel consumption and air emissions.

“When it comes to the environment, CSX is committed to moving the things that matter in a way that matters,” said Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer Michael Ward.
