U.S. Rep. Richard Neal (D-Mass.) and the Massachusetts Department of Transportation announced federal funding has been awarded for construction of a flyover that will eliminate two grade crossings in West Springfield.

The $20 million project will be funded with support from the federal government, including monies from the federal Railway-Highway Crossings Program, as well as CSX, state and local sources, according to a press release from Neal’s office.

CSX will contribute $2 million.

The project calls for eliminating two grade crossings by converting to a railroad-under grade separation through construction of an overpass along a new roadway alignment. The site is located about a mile west of the West Springfield CSX Intermodal Terminal. The crossing's proximity to the intermodal terminal results in inefficiencies to rail yard operations and can lead to both crossings being blocked for extended periods of time, government officials said.

“This crossing has posed a number of challenges to the communities of Agawam and West Springfield for several years,” said Neal.

“MassDOT is thrilled to advance this important project in support of West-East rail service that will enhance safety, improve railroad operations and reduce roadway congestion in partnership with West Springfield, Agawam and CSX,” said MassDOT Rail and Transit Administrator Meredith Slesinger. “We especially appreciate CSX’s $2 million contribution to the project and their continued partnership in advancing the commonwealth’s Compass Rail program.”
