CSX to help move imported corn from Florida port

On June 27, a ship docked at Port Manatee in Palmetto, Fla., discharged more than 42,120 metric tons of corn exported from Argentina.

Imported to help offset U.S. shortfalls, the corn will be used for animal feed. The corn will be transported by truck to port warehouses or loaded in rail cars destined for Georgia and North Carolina via CSX Transportation, port officials said in a press release.

The imported cargo is the third shipment of corn to arrive at Port Manatee since November 2012, they said. The two previous shipments were imported from Brazil.

"These corn shipments represent the flexibility our stevedores have in handling special commodities that are not handled at the port on a regular basis," said Port Manatee Executive Director Carlos Buqueras. "We are continuing to pursue special commodities on a global scale that will stimulate local hiring and generate economic growth in our region."
