The Alabama Port Authority yesterday announced its third intermodal container transfer facility (ICTF) will be located in Decatur in partnership with CSX.
The facility will complete rail connectivity from the ICTF at the Port of Mobile to customers in the central and northern parts of the state. The port will redevelop a portion of an existing CSX facility, which will expedite its ability to serve customers in north Alabama, port authority officials said in a press release.
"This expansion not only signifies our confidence in the local economy but also reflects our ongoing efforts to meet the evolving needs of our customers while contributing to the growth of the communities we serve," said John Driscoll, the port authority’s director and CEO.
The north Alabama ICTF marks the next step in the authority’s inland rail expansion and follows the success of its first inland rail partnership with CSX in Montgomery, port officials said.
"The [Decatur] facility’s strategic location improves multimodal flexibility throughout the state and creates sustainable, dynamic, rail-to-truck transportation solutions for our customers," said Maryclare Kenney, CSX vice president of intermodal and auto.
The Decatur facility is among a number of port projects set to begin operation within the next two years, port officials said.
