CSX Corp. yesterday announced that its transportation and intermodal terminals subsidiaries plan to construct an intermodal facility in McKees Rocks and Stowe Township, Pa., near Pittsburgh.The proposed $50 million Pittsburgh Intermodal Facility would provide western Pennsylvania shippers direct intermodal access, helping to shift long-haul freight from highway to rail, CSX officials said in a press release. The Class I plans to redevelop the former Pittsburgh & Lake Erie Railroad yard in McKees Rock, which has operated for more than 100 years. The Pittsburgh Intermodal Facility will be located on CSX's National Gateway, an $850 million public-private partnership venture that calls for creating a double-stack-cleared route between Mid-Atlantic ports and points in the Midwest. In early September, CSX announced the gateway's first phase was completed, providing a double-stack line between the railroad's intermodal terminals in Chambersburg, Pa., and North Baltimore, Ohio.The Class I expects to complete planning, design, permitting and property acquisitions for the 65- to 70-acre Pittsburgh Intermodal Facility in 2014, then begin the two-year construction process in 2015.The facility that will create more economic opportunities for the area and "significantly enhance distribution opportunities" for local businesses, said CSX Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer Michael Ward.CSX also announced it launched a new website at www.intermodal.com to showcase the value of intermodal and promote its intermodal services.The site features a multimedia library with informational videos and interviews; brochures and fact sheets on such topics as blocking and bracing; an interactive "build a shipment" map that enables users to customize a potential route for intermodal movements; and customer testimonials.The new website "will help new and existing customers learn about our robust offerings in an engaging way," said Bill Clement, CSX Transportation's vice president of intermodal.
