Rail News: CSX Transportation

First trains arrive at Jacksonville port's new intermodal facility

The first trains arrived yesterday at the Jacksonville Port Authority's (JAXPORT) new intermodal container transfer facility at Dames Point in Jacksonville, Fla.

Prior to the facility's official opening for commercial cargo later this year, the terminal is being used to support the port-based 832nd Transportation Battalion's military training exercises, port authority officials said in a press release.

During the exercise, U.S. Army personnel will move nearly 800 pieces of cargo — including vehicles, containers and equipment — from the facility onto a nearby military ship. The facility enables cargo to move directly between ships and trains, which speeds up the shipment process.

Construction of the $30 million facility was funded with state and federal grants. CSX rail lines serve the facility.

JAXPORT is one of 17 U.S. Strategic Seaports on call to move military cargo for national defense, foreign humanitarian assistance and disaster relief.
