Tampa port rail project to be completed next month

Construction on the Tampa Gateway Rail project at the Port of Tampa is on schedule for completion this fall, the Tampa Port Authority recently announced.

The $10.9 million project includes the construction of a multipurpose rail terminal adjacent to the port's container terminal to provide capacity for 100-car unit trains of ethanol arriving from the Midwest. Work also calls for building 13,244 linear feet of rail infrastructure to accommodate a range of general cargo. Rail has been installed and the remainder of the project is slated for completion next month.

The port authority is developing the project in partnership with CSX Transportation and Kinder Morgan Energy Partners L.P. The project will establish Florida's only on-dock unit-train service to the port's container terminal, authority officials said in a prepared statement. The project also represents a major development in the port's container capability by providing direct on-dock access to CSXT's network, they said.
