The number of trains that crossed U.S. borders with Canada and Mexico in 2010 totaled 33,790 compared with 31,509 in 2009, according to border-crossing data released last week by the U.S. Department of Transportation's Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS).

The number of passengers who crossed the borders on trains rose from 222,020 in 2009 to 257,819 in 2010. BTS data also shows that the number of truck border crossings increased 9.4 percent year over year to 10.2 million.

Other data includes the numbers of containers, buses, personal vehicles and pedestrians that crossed U.S. borders through land and water ports, and via ferry crossings. To access the online border-crossing database, follow this link.
