AASHTO leader calls on Congress to advance transportation bill

Yesterday, American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) Executive Director John Horsley called on the House and Senate Conference Committee to reach an agreement on a surface transportation bill.

In a prepared statement, he expressed frustration that the committee, which has been hashing out the bill’s details for nearly a month, has yet to reach an agreement.

“Thousands of jobs will be lost unless the House and Senate can put politics aside and move forward on a highway and transit bill,” said Horsley. “Without this bill, America’s surface transportation programs will shut down July 1 and it’s virtually certain that next year drastic cutbacks will need to be made because of a revenue shortfall in the Highway Trust Fund.”

Congress should pass the bill without delay, he added.

“The nation’s economic recovery and the communities served by departments of transportation in every state are depending on Congress to do its job,” Horsley said.
