U.S. Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao yesterday announced $291 million in Federal-State Partnership for State of Good Repair Program grants has been awarded for 11 intercity passenger-rail projects in nine states.
The grants will help fund upgrades in rail infrastructure and enhance railroad safety and reliability, Chao said in a press release. Of the funding total, $198 million was made available from the Further Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2020 and $93,422,706 in remaining funds were made available through the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2019.
The Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) published a notice of funding opportunity for this award cycle on June 10. The evaluation and selection process considered several factors in choosing projects, including the project's abilities to improve service and safety and to meet existing or anticipated demand.
The following 11 projects were selected. Project descriptions are available on the FRA's website.• Walk Bridge Replacement, $79.7 million, Connecticut Department of Transportation;• Connecticut River Bridge Replacement, $65.2 million, Amtrak, Connecticut;• Pacific Surfliner Corridor Rehabilitation and Service Reliability, $31.8 million, Southern California Regional Rail Authority, California;• Worcester Union Station Accessibility and Infrastructure Improvements, $29.3 million, Massachusetts;• Trenton Transit Center Station Improvements, $18.3 million, New Jersey Transit;• Harrisburg Line Signal System Renewal: Paoli to Overbrook, $15.9 million, Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority;• Ypsilanti to Jackson Curve Modifications, $15.6 million, Michigan Department of Transportation;• Newington Road Bridge Replacement, $14.4 million, Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation;• San Diego Next Generation Signaling and Grade Crossing Modernization, $9.8 million, North County Transit District, California;• MARC Northeast Corridor Train Storage Preservation Project, $9.4 million, Maryland Transit Administration; and• Hudson Avenue Grade Crossing Rehabilitation and Safety Improvements, $2 million, New York State Department of Transportation.
