The U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) has proposed to update and codify a department-wide internal order regarding its implementation of federal environmental regulations under the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA).

USDOT officials want to modify the department's NEPA procedures in response to the Council on Environmental Quality's final rule — issued in July — updating its NEPA regulation, as well as past reauthorization measures related to USDOT's environmental review process, department officials said in a press release.

USDOT's notice of proposed rulemaking for "Procedures for Considering Environmental Impacts" was published Nov. 23 in the Federal Register.

Public comments on the proposal will be accepted until Dec. 23.
