A coalition of 22 U.S. transit agencies has written to Congress asking for $39.3 billion in federal funding for mass transit in the next coronavirus relief bill.
The coalition, assembled by Metropolitan Transportation Authority Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Patrick Foye, is seeking the aid to address COVID 19-related deficits and prevent deep service cuts, thousands of employee layoffs and decimated capital improvement projects.
The coalition also said the funds could create hundreds of thousands of well-paying jobs.
“Given the unprecedented ridership declines, revenue losses and additional costs caused by the pandemic, a new independent economic analysis shows that $39.3 billion in additional investment is needed to maintain operations today and to get through the years ahead,” the letter states.
“By devoting resources to transit, we can create jobs and strengthen the infrastructure that moves not only people, but our economy," the executives wrote.
